Waiving
So, I went online today to waive my RHIT insurance. On the page, I was present with (among other things) this message:

Now, my question is simple: Are they using the words "PRIOR" and "START" ironically or are they simply quoting from another source? I ask because I cannot think of another gramatically valid reason to put those words in quotation marks. If they are using them ironically, does that mean that I can only waive my issurance after the "START" of the quarter or does it mean that I can waive it whenever I please? If they are quoting just those two words, why did they choose a source which wrote them in capitalized, bold-face letters and fail to cite the source? That just seems silly. Now, I suppose they could be using the words in some abstract sense in which they don't actually mean the common definition of either "prior" or "start", but instead mean to reference the words themselves. Or perhaps they may be trying to refer to the title of short peice of artistic work such as a short story or poem and that I am to use the contents of such works to help understand the sentence they have given me. Regardless, no one answered when I tried to call to inquire about what the sentence actually meant. Perhaps they are only availible "PRIOR" to the "START" of the workday...

Irony
So I was watching C-SPAN today and there was an interview with Mitch Bainwol, the CEO of RIAA. Strangely enough, the program was taped on 6/6/06. Coincidence? I don't think so.

We are transmitting
So today after work, I went on an adventure. Over in West Terre Haue, WMHD has its transmitter. For over a week, it hasn't been transmitting despite the fact that everything in the studio was working. Today, I and roommates Rob and Steve went to correct this problem. Strangely enough the transmitter was in a field behind a house covered in "No Trespassing" signs that was inhabited by approximately ten 8 to 14 year-olds. We had expected the transmitter to be powered off, but everything was being provided power. After poking around for about half an hour and talking to Leven a few times, I decided to press the manual power on button (usually it is activated by a phone control system but that hadn't been responding). After that, we began to hear things over the radio. My current belief is that the phone line is down either due to problems in the location ( I couldn't get the only other phone there to work) or due to our bill being delinquint.

In other WMHD news, from midnight until 2am every night is Video Game Music. Also, the requests page is better in several ways.

Illegal Immigration
From time to time, people come up to me up to me and say, "Guy?"

I reply, "Yes, hypothetical person?"

"Guy, what can we do about the problem of illegal immigration in America?"

I respond, "Well, obviously the answer is gay marriage!"

"Gay marriage!" they respond, "how can gay marriage solve illegal immigration?" Of course, the confusion is expected. Hypothetical person is used to hearing answers like "put soldiers on the boarder" or "criminalize hiring of illegals" or other such things.

Thus, I must educate them: "Well you see, people in America have remarkably short attention spans. They also tend to have a slightly absurd hierarchy of 'evils' that they are fighting against. It just so happens that the average American things that gay marriage is higher up on this hierarchy than illegal immigration."

Invariably the response follows, "Ah yes, I can understand that...but how can that actually help?"

Seeing that further enlightenment is necessary, I resume my role of wise teacher: "There are two paths we may take here: misdirection and association. If we choose the former, we can solve the problem of illegal immigration by making people not pay attention to it anymore. All that is necessary is for the right people to stop talking about immigration and to begin talking about the scourge of gay marriage."

Hypothetical usually scoffs, "That won't solve the problem! That's just ignoring it!"

My student is a slow learner, but I am a patient teacher. I continue: "Now, when did you most recently begin to see illegal immigration as a problem to America?" I pause for only a moment then answer my own semi-rhetorical question, "A few weeks or months ago, yes?"

My student ponders for a moment then slowly nods, "I suppose so..."

"Yes, of course. Now, what made you begin to roll the issue over in your mind? What made you suddenly begin searching for the answer to this quandary?"

Again, Hypothetical pauses and considers, "I suppose I started reading about it in the papers; maybe I saw it on the evening news. I'm not exactly sure."

"So if you hadn't heard it in the media, you'd never have considered it?"

"I suppose not..."

"Now you understand how the first path is achieved: cease discussion and the problem vanishes for mind. Now to the second path: association. The key here is to take the take gay marriage and link it inextricably with illegal immigration. They must be made as one issue; never should one be discussed without the other being mentioned in the same breath."

Hypothetical interrupts me, "How can you do that though? Those two issues have nothing to do with each other! Reasonable people will see through the false association."

"Reasonable people?" at this, I nearly laugh, "whatever do you mean by reasonable? The majority of the populace pays more attention to who's winning American Idol than they do to the sensibility of their news. All that is necessary is to repeat the claim often enough and loud enough. A dozen or so newspaper opinions writers in popular papers, maybe three or four television and radio pundits--that's all that would be necessary to bring the idea onto the national stage. From there, the big media groups would run with it."

HP ponders my words for a time then replies, "So, we associate the issues together, then what?"

"Ah, of course, we simply say that one is responsible for the other. After that it'll only be a few days before some congressman who is attempting to gain political favor develops a comprehensive plan to deal with the situation perhaps a bill like 'Building Stronger Families by a Secure Border,' 'The Fence to Greater Family Values,' or 'Get Ridda Them There Gays so They Stop Stealing Our Job!' Any of these are likely to make anyone who was ever considering becoming an illegal alien so confused, angry, or offended that they either don't come to initially or make sure that they are legal so they aren't accused of being gay job thieves."

Hypothetical, now having heard all my evidence, simply nods and leaves me be. His knowledge and understanding of both the issues at hand and the human condition have been irrevocably altered.

Nation States
So, I just found a cool thing on the internet: Nation States. Nation States is a political simulation game that is online and multiplayer. The premise of the game is that you create a country and guide it through its development by taking sides on various issues. Each day you are asked to make a decision on an issue which has confronted your country. For example, today I was asked if democracy should be compulsory in my nation. There is no way to 'win' the game in any true sense. There is no ability to control trade or to wage war, but it does seem like an interesting thing to do once a day.

If anyone wants to join, I have created a region for RHIT people: Roses and Hulmans. Once you join, you can trasfer there.

That's just coincidental
I have found my favorite punctuation mark. I believe it is even better than the Interrobang. It is the irony mark ( ? ). I shall attempt to use it in my writings; though that may prove difficult.

Artemis
So yeah, I completely rearranged my winamp playlist yesterday. A while ago trythil gave me the extra copy of Atermis' Gravity that he got through magnatune. Unfortunately, for whatever reason it never made it into my playlist until now. I must say, it is quite good and I recomend it to whoever likes electronica with solid vocals.

This afternoon, I slept for 6 hours after work. I was exhausted and it was nice.

I've had a few conversations lately with different people that have been amazingly similar. It makes me nostalgic..

Movin, stuff, etc.
Last night, Andrew and I started moving at ~5pm. Aside from a small break for dinner, we continued moving from then until slightly after 2 am. We moved everything we own (and something thing we didn't) from BSB to Skinner. All that is left of mine is the rack which I've stored in the studio office for now. I do not yet have a plan to move it. I may attempt to move it this weekend. I have not yet decided.

We set up our room so that I have a little cubby hole in which to sleep that is between a pair of dressers and the wall. It is just slightly wider than the twin beds we are given and is suprising comfortable. I still have to figure out what to do about taking off my glasses at night and about blocking the light from the window, but I think I may solve these problems with a cheap adjustable curtain rod from place. Andrew is sleeping on the top bunk of the bunk beds and we're going to use the bottom one for storage (much like Greg and Andrew did last summer).

This sunday, I talked to an old friend of mine that I hadn't talked to in forever. It was nice to talk to her again.

This morning, I got less than half way to work, remembered that I didn't have my bag (with my lab notebook and other needed items) and turned around. I then came all the way to Ventures (where I am doing scans) and realized that I didn't have the samples. I then turned around and went all the way back to Rose, then back to Ventures. By this point, I was rather hungry, thirsty and irritable, so I got some hash browns at burger king. They were tasty.

I am really really tired. I want to go to sleep right now, but I have scanning to do. Onward..

Recent Wrap-up
So, a rather lot has been going on lately, so I figured I should update the world on it all.

  1. Grades Came Out
    CSSE332Operating SystemsA
    OE450Laser Systems & ApplicationsB
    PH325Adv Physics Laboratory IA
    PH402Intro to Atomic PhysicsA

My GPA fell by .02 points to 3.85.

    Graph:
  2. I added search functionality to the link
I'm still working on a few things with it. The boxes don't look right when they wrap, and if you have the link set to open in new windows (the standard), then the search term gets left in the box. Fixing the last one will require javascript unfortunately.
  3. Two Deck Sections to Go
Yesterday, we took down all of the deck except for my and Greg's (Tom's?) section. We'll most likely have the rest down today so that we can be ready to move into Skinner on Monday or Tuesday.
  4. Games Beaten
Since classes ended for me (about two weeks ago), I have beaten several games:
  5. Research
I've been doing research for Dr. McInerny. Most of it has been occuring at Ventures thus far. Luckily, I'm not being managed by them so it will be easier to get things done. Mainly I've been using the Spectrophotometer (essentially a giant colorimeter) to attempt to determine the structure of a compound. Next week we should be getting some new samples and we'll be changing our focus to something else.

Well that seems like about it. k, bye.

One deck section down, 3 (4?) to go.

Also of note:

  • guyblade.com is now almost XHTML 1.0 Transitional.
  • I beat Mario and Luigi: Partners in Time
